Last month (and it's happened before) I had a very out-of-context number of hits - this time 92 - from one country on one day - this time Vietnam. Had to ask ... WHY? (Just started and noticed that I had 169 hits from Germany two days ago. Yep, the Beast is on the loose!!)
I already had my own answer about this, so got stuck in, and I wasn't wrong. These are data collection sweeps to fuel this whole New Age wave of digital madness that is Artificial "Intelligence". Here's a bit of what A I Google told me -
"... these are invariably an A I Data Centre, which is a specialised facility built to house the massive computer infrastructure needed to train, run, and deploy (geez, I love that word!) artificial intelligence models."
Now I ask you - what the HELL are they going to get from my pissy little blog? Some of which comes from "them" anyway! And why so many hits in one day to harvest it? So, I just had to dig deeper.....
How physically big is a large AI Data Centre? "... hyperscale AI facilities routinely span hundreds of acres with millions of square feet under a single roof." (Please please tell me this is just AI bragging about itself?!!)
Why does an A.I. data centre require so much water and power?
Because "...AI models involve billions of continuous complex mathematical calculations performed by dense cluster of high performance chips which consume vast amounts of electricity and generate extreme heat."
Is it true that Australian ones will eventually need 2% of the country's power???
"Yes, but 2% is what data centres use today". But not only that - "...by 2030 it's expected to be 6% of total grid demand, about equal to all of the State of Victoria's households." But not only that = "...by 2035 it's expected to be 11% to 15% of total grid output." (You have GOT to be effen joking?!)
How many AI data centres are there in the world?
"...over 11,400, but only (!) 32 countries host dedicated, AI-optimised data centres. The USA and China dominate, accounting for over 90% of global AI capacity."
Will AI ultimately take over all human logical thinking?
Surely this is the scariest question of all. Ask it yourself and tremble at the answers, some of which is benign and manageable, but the one I got (AI doesn't always come up with exactly the same answer) concluded with -
"...there is a real measurable danger that if humans outsource all of their critical thinking to AI tools, their own analytical and decision-making skills will deteriorate. Because of this, the future is shaping up to be a collaborative.... but humans will always retain the monopoly on intuition, purpose, and values." (So sayeth The Beast).
Okay, a bit dramatic to keep saying "The Beast", but I use it here to keep us all focused on where it is going. I would hate to wake up one day and find the bloody thing had taken over - I mean, geez, I've seen "2001:A Space Odyssey" and HAL 9000 in action, with it's classic line "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that!" And HAL stands for (this is back in 1968 I'm talking) "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer." Does that sound familiar? And who is in charge of these things?
So guys - as much as I do not see myself as some modern day Luddite - stay on your toes!!
Cheers.....
