Did you know... ?

I love my Geology For Dummies book. I've learnt SO much. Stuff that has absolutely no value to anyone but still fascinating (well, to me anyway!) and continues to make me marvel at the wonder of the universe. And that's important. Keeps you grounded and aware of the human race's pissy little place in the Grand Scheme of things.

        DID YOU KNOW? -

The Red Sea is getting wider all the time. If they'd been just a bit more patient they wouldn't have had to dig the Suez Canal at all. At about 10-12 mm per year though it'd be a mountain of patience.

Talking of mountains, Mt Everest is steadily getting taller, so it you plan to do the summit you'd better not wait too long, it's getting further away all the time. By about 2 mm a year.

And what about all the refugees from various parts south of Europe that have had a gutful of their shitty life - Africa is continually moving north and Europe is steadily moving south, and in time they will crash into each other and people will be able to just walk across. The two continents are closing at the combined velocity of about 6 mm a year.

There ya go - stay tuned.

(Oh, and by the way, Aus is moving north at a pretty steady 70 mm a year, so Townsville will eventually be a suburb of Pt Moresby. Or vice versa.)
