More Stuff You Need To Know

In the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, there's a population of 47,000 quaking aspen trees covering some 43 hectares. But genetic study of these recently turned up that in fact this is actually one tree, and that it's estimated to be some 80,000 years old. It simply looks like a forest of thousands because it keeps sending up "new" trees from its roots. (But it sure begs the question - how did the first one get there??).

        Not only, but also...

Chimpanzees, gorillas, and humans (genetically and taxonomic-ly speaking) form a single African great ape grouping, within which the gorilla is a slightly less related sister species. In fact, as one expert put it, humans are merely the "third chimpanzee". Ah, I do so love these snippets that put we arrogantly dominant species into a proper context!
